Quick Fix Summary
TL;DR: Your Openpath door reader won’t unlock when you wave your hand? First, check that Bluetooth and location are on, and the Openpath app is installed and running in the background. Then peek at the reader’s LED light. If it’s flashing red, unplug and replug the reader. Still stuck? Restart both the app and your phone.
What's happening here?
Openpath turns your smartphone into a key—no fob or card required. It listens for your phone’s Bluetooth or NFC signal through a nearby reader. When you wave your hand and nothing happens, nine times out of ten it’s because your phone and reader aren’t chatting properly, or the app dozed off in the background.
How do I fix it?
- Tweak your phone’s settings:
- Turn Bluetooth on: Settings > Bluetooth and flip the switch.
- Enable location: Settings > Privacy > Location Services and switch it on. Openpath needs location to know you’re nearby.
- Let the app refresh in the background: On iOS, Settings > Openpath > Background App Refresh and turn it on. On Android, Settings > Apps > Openpath > Battery > Background restriction and lift the restriction.
- Keep the app awake:
- On iOS: Don’t swipe the Openpath app away—let it sit in the background. It wakes up automatically when it hears the reader.
- On Android: Settings > Apps > Openpath > Battery > Background restriction and disable it.
- Read the reader’s mood:
- A steady blue LED? Good to go. Flashing red? That’s an error—unplug the reader, wait five seconds, then plug it back in.
- Run a quick test:
- Stand three to five feet from the reader with your phone in hand or pocket.
- Wave slowly in front of the reader. The door should click open in two or three seconds if everything’s talking.
- Reboot if needed:
- Kill the Openpath app: On iOS, swipe up from the bottom, pause, then flick the Openpath card away. On Android, Settings > Apps > Openpath > Force stop.
- Reopen the app and let it run in the background.
- Still dead? Restart your phone.
