How Can I Link 2 PF Accounts?

by
Last updated on 3 min read

Quick Fix: Head to the EPFO portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in, click Online Services > Transfer Request, and file your request to merge that old PF account into your shiny new UAN.

What's happening with my two PF accounts?

You need to consolidate them into one account.

If you’ve got multiple EPF accounts tied to different UANs, the EPFO wants you to merge them. Why? Because two active UANs aren’t allowed under the “One Employee - One EPF Account” rule—even in 2026. Skip this step and you’ll face taxable interest on your savings plus lose out on benefits. Changing jobs? Transfer the balance instead of withdrawing; otherwise you’ll trigger taxes and kill your compound growth.

How do I actually merge the accounts?

Use the EPFO member portal to file an online transfer request.
  1. Open the portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
  2. Sign in with your UAN and password. Forgot the password? Hit “Forgot Password,” enter your UAN, and reset it with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
  3. Navigate to Online Services > Transfer Request.
  4. Plug in your previous Member ID (the EPF account linked to the old UAN) and the current employer’s details.
  5. Click Get OTP to verify via the mobile number tied to your new UAN.
  6. Submit the form. You’ll get an OTP on both your phone and email—enter it to confirm.
  7. Once confirmed, your request lands with your current employer for attestation. Your old employer might get pinged too if the EPFO needs extra paperwork.
  8. After attestation, the EPFO usually finishes the transfer within 20 days (as of 2026 standards). Track progress in the same portal under Track Claim Status.

I tried the online transfer and it failed—now what?

Fall back to a manual claim via Form 13 or escalate through email and phone.
  • Manual Claim via Form 13: Grab Form 13 from the EPFO website, fill it out, and hand it to your current employer for attestation. It still works in 2026, but expect a longer wait than the online route.
  • Email Request (for UAN linking issues): Shoot an email to uanepf@epfindia.gov.in. Put both UANs in the subject line, add your name, mobile number, and a short note explaining the problem. It’s slower and only worth trying if the online transfer stalls.
  • Call EPFO Helpdesk: Ring 1800 118 005 (toll-free) between 9 AM and 6 PM on working days in 2026. A rep can walk you through the steps or escalate to your regional office if things get stuck.

How can I stop this mess from happening again?

Link every new EPF account to your existing UAN and keep your details updated.
  • When you join a new employer, ask HR to confirm your UAN matches your previous one. Always link the new EPF account to that same UAN.
  • Install the EPFO mobile app (EPFO Care) and check which Member IDs are tied to your UAN every few months. Refresh your KYC every six months so verification never stalls.
  • Never cash out your PF balance when switching jobs unless you’re out of work for more than two months. Transferring keeps your tax benefits and lets compound growth do its thing.
  • Update your UAN, mobile number, and Aadhaar in the portal so OTPs and alerts reach you without a hitch.

Note: If your previous employer ghosts you or the transfer drags past 30 days, file a grievance through the EPFO grievance portal at epfigms.gov.in.
